The Issues

26,000 young people age out of foster care every year in the United States. 200 young people age out every year in Louisiana

•On average, for every young person that ages out of foster care without support, taxpayers and communities pay $300,000 in social costs over that person’s lifetime

Less than 3 percent of youth aging out of foster care will complete a college education without support

1 in 4 former foster youth will experience PTSD; 2 times the rate of U.S. war veterans

1 in 5 will become homeless after age 18

Get Assistance

Project 18's Emergency Funds are granted to youth for unexpected transportation, rent, or other documented one-time emergency costs. Project 18 works with these youth on budgeting, time management and other skills to ensure that such emergencies are less likely to recur or, if they do, that they are better able to cope.
